S&P 500: The Winners and Losers of March 2025

March was a difficult month for the S&P 500, with the index dropping 5.75% after a smaller 1.4% decline in February. Among the 500 constituents, 349 ended the month in negative territory, but a few stocks managed notable gains. Dollar General ($DG) surged 18.54% following stronger-than-expected Q4 results and progress on its turnaround strategy under returning CEO Todd Vasos. Huntington Ingalls Industries ($HII) climbed 16.21% after announcements about boosting the American shipbuilding industry and securing a new $182 million Air Force contract. The Mosaic Company ($MOS) gained 12.92% on positive long-term guidance and a $150 million cost-cutting program. On the downside, airlines suffered severely, with Delta Air Lines ($DAL) plummeting 27.48% after halving its Q1 earnings forecast due to weakening travel demand, while United Airlines ($UAL) fell 26.39% amid similar concerns. Teradyne ($TER) dropped 24.81% after warning about potential impacts from escalating US-China trade tensions.. Read the full article here.

Atai Capital: AstroNova Inc. ($ALOT) Investment Case

In their Q4-2024 investor letter, Atai Capital provides an update on their significant position in AstroNova Inc. ($ALOT), which has shown business improvement with run-rate EBITDA growing from $11M to over $21M since their initial investment in January 2023. Despite this operational progress, the company’s $20M acquisition of MTEX has substantially underperformed expectations, generating operating losses and minimal revenue. The letter highlights a key management change with new CFO Tom DeByle, whose impressive track record at Standex gives Atai confidence in improved capital allocation decisions moving forward. Trading at less than 5.0x projected 2027 EBITDA with an $88M market cap and $137M enterprise value, Atai maintains their position in AstroNova due to its attractive valuation, potential for continued EBITDA growth as narrowbody aircraft production recovers, and $4M+ in Honeywell royalty expenses expiring by 2027. $MSTR: Multiple Insiders Sell, Including CEO and CFO

Director Leslie Rechan sold 15,000 shares of MicroStrategy ($MSTR) at $335.90 each, totaling $5.04 million and reducing his holdings by 25%. Four other insiders also sold shares—among them CEO Phong Le and CFO Andrew Kang. This wave of insider selling comes as the company ramps up Bitcoin purchases, reinforcing its position as the most aggressively Bitcoin-exposed public company. Trending Tickers: $NMAX IPO Frenzy, $RKT Acquisition Spree, $TSLA’s Delivery Decline

Summary of Trending Tickers:

This week, several stocks drew investor attention due to major developments. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Newsmax ($NMAX): Newsmax made a volatile public debut on the NYSE, raising $75 million at $10 per share. The stock surged as high as $265 in early trading before crashing nearly 80% to close at $52.71 within days. The sharp swings reflect retail-driven speculation and a low float, pushing Newsmax’s valuation briefly above major media companies.
  • Rocket Companies ($RKT): Rocket announced a $9.4 billion all-stock acquisition of Mr. Cooper Group ($COOP), just a week after its deal for Redfin. The move aims to build an AI-powered homeownership ecosystem spanning real estate, mortgage origination, and servicing. The combined platform is expected to generate $500 million in annual synergies and enhance client retention and recurring revenue.
  • Tesla ($TSLA): Tesla reported a 13% drop in Q1 2025 vehicle deliveries, missing expectations amid factory downtime tied to the refreshed Model Y. Deliveries of all models declined year-over-year, with broader concerns about demand and production transitions.
